The Story of That One Summer

One summer, two San Diego ceramicists set out to bring more locally made pottery to the wonderful shops, boutiques, and gift stores in our community. That’s us—Jo Ann and Susan.

We’re actually often at home during the summer because, well, it’s San Diego. But when we go on vacation, our favorite mementos are goods that are both practical and evocative–we seek out enduring keepsakes to use daily and that take us back to the sights, sounds, and feelings of the journey.

We knew that visitors to our town wanted this from their travels, too. So we got busy making, one piece at a time, and we started building what That One Summer stands for today.

  • One-of-a-kind pottery with a distincly California feel.

  • Functional pieces that get used all the time, bring people together, and recall those easy days by the beach.

  • Ceramic keepsakes and gifts that elevate the notion of a souvenir.

Our handmade pottery recalls that one summer spent on the California coast—early morning surf checks with a hot cup of coffee, single stems of bougainvillea in sandy little vases scattered around the beach house, craft brews as the sun sets in the west, deep conversations around the fire pit at the shores.

When we’re not at the pottery wheel making pieces for That One Summer, we’re busy running a popular clay studio called Mud Lily in San Diego’s Normal Heights community. Next time you’re in the area, we hope you’ll come say hello.
